Ear Tissue Biomechanics

The human external ear canal skin (bony part) with eardrum and malleus attached was harvested from cadaver.

Mechanical properties of the external ear canal skin, tympanic membrane (eardrum), three middle ear ligaments and tendons (stapedial tendon, tensor tympani tendon and anterior malleolar ligament) are tested on a computer controlled material testing machine manufactured by TESTRESOURCES Co.

Typical stress-strain curves of the biological tissue (e.g., eardrum). The hysteresis phenomenon is clearly shown in this figure under loading and unloading.
